Reactionary rant: the "birth certificate" crapola

If your mother is a citizen of the United States at the time of your birth, then YOU are a citizen of the United States at the time of your birth, regardless of WHERE that birth took place. As a U.S. citizen at the time of your birth, you are a NATURAL-BORN CITIZEN OF THE UNITED STATES (the term is meant in contrast to "naturalized citizen," which is a citizen of another country at birth who later *becomes* a U.S. citizen, or of course "noncitizen," which would be someone who never became a U.S. citizen). If a pregnant American woman is on vacation in England and gives birth, that child is still a natural-born citizen of the United States. Such an occurrence would never preclude that child's eventual eligibility to become president of the United States. That would be absurd!

Now as far as I'm concerned you can make all the arguments you want about Barack Obama, but the whole "birth certificate" controversy is stupidity at its finest.

It would be absurd and it should be absurd, but the fact is that if Barack Obama was actually born somewhere other than on U.S. soil on the date on which he was born, he actually would NOT be a natural-born U.S. citizen. It's an odd thing that results from the combination of his father not being a U.S. citizen and his mother not having lived in the U.S. for a total of six years AFTER her 14th birthday. That law has been changed since then, but because his mother was a few months short of her 20th birthday when Obama was born, he would not be a natural born citizen IF HE HAD NOT BEEN BORN IN THE U.S. That's why the sink Obama forces are tying themselves in knots to cast doubt on his place of birth - if he was born on U.S. soil, it wouldn't matter WHO his parents were or to whom they swore allegiance. With that said, let me just add that "crapola" is the best description of the whole ridiculous argument I've ever seen.

As promised, my rant against the gay marriage bans

I haven't taken the time to outline this post, so it will probably start to wander all over the place. Consider yourself warned. But here's my rant on California's Prop 8 and the two other gay marriage bans that were enacted by the voters on Tuesday. Let's go over the standard arguments against gay marriage, and I'll address them one by one. (Thanks to the jackasses at nogaymarriage.com for making this easier.) Maybe it'll help keep this a little more organized, but I still don't promise not to stray a bit. * God says it's bad, according to the Book, anyway. We have no business legalizing behavior prohibited by God. Alright, I'm going to get the God argument out of the way right now.
